Leaves: Tough, flattened leaves
Flowers: Terminal spike of flowers, 3-15 cm L x 2-4 cm D. Comprised of numerous spikelets 5-8 mm L, with 6-8 bracts that are covered in short fine hairs, red brown to grey brown. Six scales are found at the base of the stamen and are whitish in colour.
Flowering Time: Spring to Summer
Fruit: Nut, 2.7-4.0 mm L x 1.3-1.8mm D. Pale to dark brown, smooth and shiny.
Habitat/distribution: A perennial this common tufted herb grows in heath, woodland and forest in sandy soils, mainly in coastal areas. Also Qld, NSW and Vic.
Where to See: Predominantly in coastal areas, covering the northwest, north, east and south east of Tasmania
