Botanical Name: Themeda triandra
Common Name: kangaroo grass
Family: Poaceae
Size and shape: Moderate sized grass in dense tufts, quite tall (up to 1.5m high), erect flowering stems.
Leaves: Flat leaves a few mm wide and up to 0.5m long, a grey-green colour in winter, turning red-brown in summer.
Flowers: The inflorescences are 10-30cm long, at the ends of the branches and tend to be nodding. Each inflorescence has a large, bract subtending it. Blooks strongly perfumed.
Flowering Time: Mostly spring and summer.
Habitat/distribution: Themeda triandra is one of Tasmania's most common and recognisable native grasses. It is a dominant species in native grassland and grassy woodland.

Other notes: Indigenous Australians harvested it to make bread and string for fishing nets. Food for catapillars.
