Botanical Name: Correa backhouseana
Common Name: Velvet correa (Tas), Coastal correa (Vic)
Family: Rutaceae
Size: 2 m high x 1.5 – 2.0 m wide.
Leaves: Oval to elliptical-shaped leathery leaves. 3 cm long, on short stalks. Smooth upper surface with rust-coloured hairs underneath.
Flowers: Cream, pendulous tubes to 2.5 cm long, which flare slightly at the ends to reveal the stamens
Flowering Time: Winter - summer
Fruit: Small nutty, 4-valved capsule containing 4 seeds.
Habitat/distribution: Coastal habitat along North-West, West and South coasts of Tasmania. Also, Bass Strait Islands particularly King Island.
Where to See: Coast line between Penguin and Burnie, west of Wynyard – Stanley, and all down west coast right around to South-East Cape.
Other notes: Easy to propagate from cuttings and makes a wonderful screen. Can grow to 3 metres high in some situations and responds well to clipping.
